Camshaft Phaser Problem

Camshaft Phaser

Camshaft Phaser Problems are a common problem with some big valve engines and their design has since been updated. They also have a bit of an oil pressure problem. Cam phasers are used to advance and retract cam timing. This is oil pressure controlled by variable cam timing solenoids. Solenoids control oil pressure on command to advance or reverse the timing. If the pressure drops because of a bad part, it will cause knocking. Basically the locking pin keeps the oil thin at idle and the problem goes away when you start driving. The repair does not require any special tools, except maybe a timing chain wedge tool. Here's a quick way to repair cam phasers.

Symptoms

'Check Engine' light is on

Poor engine performance

Engine noise

Reasons

  • Oil pressure
  • Oil Level
  • Type Of Oil
  • Dirty Oil

The most obvious sign of bad cam phasers is a clicking sound that is very loud. Remember that you can hear the injections, which also make a clicking sound. But if something gets louder and doesn't go away when the engine is warm, you should take the car to a shop and have it checked.
